Panarchy: Adaptive Cycles of Change
Preparing your future today
We all know that we live in an increasingly VUCA world where waves of change are coming at us one after the other, leaving almost no time to catch our breath. This is where we come in.
Organizations are complex systems that inevitably go through multiple cycles of reorganization and growth. What has changed remarkably is not so much the fact that these cycles exist, but the pace at which these need to be navigated. This practice looks at solutions that build adaptive organizations—specially designed to sense and respond to their environments. We also have a special focus on preparing for a digital future.
“You can’t do today’s job with yesterday’s methods and still be in business tomorrow”
Do you know if your organization has what it takes to stay adaptive and stay ahead of the game?
Do you know that adaptive organizations are designed like living and breathing organisms? They are alive to their environment, constantly being able to sense what is happening around them and being able to respond to these changes.Does your organizational design, its culture, and its processes, encourage flexibility and agility? Unless you have actively
given this thought and effort—chances are that this is not the case.
Think about the developments in your industry that you could have gained from. Are there a few that you would have liked to profit from early on? Are there in fact quite a few?
These are perhaps some of the most important questions you should ask yourself as you prepare for your organizations ability to change tomorrow. It is no longer sufficient to lead successive cycle of change from the top—the pace of change on the outside just won’t allow it.
To succeed tomorrow you will need to build an organization that is able to change, adapt and prepare for a future tomorrow.
Here are some of the ways we can help.
01 Adaptive Leadership Team
Do you have an adaptive senior leadership team? Is there more that can be done to ensure you have the right skills and right mindsight in the team. This is the most appropriate starting point for any organization on it’s journey to become more adaptive.
We can help you work through ways that bring the right diversity of skills and the right future focus into your senior leadership team.
02 Adaptive Organization Design
Traditional organizational design was geared towards stability. Vertical hierarchies, centralized decision-making, focus on the immediate, all make for an organization geared towards incremental change.
An adaptive organization on the other hand needs several environment spanning functions, and then it requires mechanisms for information sharing. A study of firms responding to the 2008 financial crisis found that the extent of horizontal information influences speed of adaptation.
At the same time an adaptive organization requires distributed leadership since centralized leadership considerably slows down response. And in order to successfully decentralize leadership you need a high commitment to a common charter and trust within an organization.
So building adaptive organizations is in fact not the same as building traditional organizations. Agility needs to be designed into organizations through processes, structures and culture. We can help you map where you are in this journey, and facilitate a discussion that allows you to map how you would like to work with this information.
